Aviation Crew Chief - Cabinet & Finish Department

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Aviation Crew Chief for the Cabinet and Finish Departments is responsible for leading, coordinating, and supervising all activities related to the fabrication, assembly, and final finishing of custom aircraft interior components. This role ensures that all work is completed to the highest standards of quality, safety, and efficiency while meeting project schedules and expectations.

The Crew Chief serves as the primary point of contact for daily shop operations, providing technical guidance and direction to a team of skilled technicians, managing workflow across both departments, and ensuring proper execution of materials, tooling, and finish processes. This position requires a strong understanding of aviation cabinetry, high-end finishing techniques, and the ability to lead a skilled team in a fast-paced, quality-driven environment.

Key responsibilities include assigning tasks, monitoring progress, inspecting work for compliance with drawings and specifications, and coordinating with Engineering, Quality teams to support seamless execution. The Crew Chief plays a critical role in upholding production goals, mentoring team members, and driving continuous improvement across both departments.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Lead daily operations of the Cabinet and Finish departments, ensuring efficient workflow, high-quality output, and adherence to schedule
  • Assign work based on skill level and project needs; monitor progress and provide hands-on support as necessary
  • Supervise, coach, and mentor technicians to ensure individual and team performance aligns with department goals
  • Oversee the fabrication, assembly, and installation of custom cabinetry and components
  • Direct all finish work, including sanding, staining, painting, clear coating, sealing, and polishing, to meet quality standards
  • Ensure all work complies with engineering drawings, and specifications
  • Identify and address defects or rework needs promptly to maintain production efficiency
  • Coordinate workload between Cabinet and Finish teams to optimize productivity and reduce bottlenecks
  • Manage materials, tools, and equipment; ensure proper maintenance and availability
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the shop floor and upper management, engineering, and quality control team
  • Support cross-training initiatives to promote flexibility and coverage across both departments
  • Foster a positive team environment that promotes accountability, craftsmanship, and continuous improvement
  • Quickly assess and resolve production issues or personal conflicts with minimal disruption
  • Make informed decisions on job sequencing, technician assignment, and task prioritization
  • Provide feedback to leadership on department performance, capacity, and staffing needs

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational training or technical certification in upholstery or related field preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in aircraft preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years of leadership or supervisory experience preferred
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting technical drawings, blueprints and work instructions
  • Proven ability to lead and motivate a team, delegate tasks effectively, and manage performance
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Able to provide coaching, training and constructive feedback to team members
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to prioritize workloads and meet deadlines
  • Must be willing to work overtime as needed to meet production demands
